The southern hemisphere’s largest, privately owned collection of military memorabilia can be found in Cairns.

The Australian Armour and Artillery Museum has over one hundred tanks and armoured carriers on display in its sizable premises. There’s no glass to come between visitors and the displays, and almost everything can be touched. It’s an incredible way to understand the size and scope of these machines.

A few of the tanks are still fully operational, and one gets taken out twice a day for guests to ride. The FV 432 armoured carrier was used to transport British troops during the Gulf War, before the museum acquired it.

Another way to get up and close to the memorabilia is to hire out the shooting gallery. The museum has a range of different service weapons available to fire. Packages start from $80 and include 30 rounds of ammunition.
