‘Tenteram’ is an Indonesian word meaning tranquil, peaceful and serene.
You may be tempted to add the word ‘delicious’ to that definition after you sign up for a class at Tenteram Fine Foods Cooking School on the Gold Coast.
Justin and Kay Reeves are the hosts and culinary guides at this beautiful, Balinese-inspired cooking school – hidden away in the hinterland, 10 minutes from Currumbin Beach.
After spending his youth in Indonesia, Australian-born Justin was driven to share his passion for south-east Asian culture. His partner, Kay, is equally smitten with all thing Balinese – though she honed her cooking skills much closer to home. Kay grew up on Stradbroke Island where her grandparents owned the island’s first teahouse.
The pair also share a dedication to healthy eating – incorporating fresh superfood ingredients like turmeric, chilli, lemongrass and ginger in their cooking classes. Students master the art of making all manner of delicious dishes – from traditional Nasi Goreng to Beef Rendang Curry and Chicken Satay on Lemongrass Skewers.
Kay and Justin have also created their own range of all-natural, hand-made curry pastes, relishes and sauces.
When cooking classes aren’t in session, the Reeves offer a secluded bed and breakfast experience – with two beautifully decorated ensuited bedrooms, a living area and access to tropical gardens and swimming pool.
The pair are long-time meditators too, offering meditation workshops and classes in their little piece of paradise on the coast.
