Tropical North Queensland Eco-Tourism

Tropical north Queensland is home to a range of world class eco-tourism experiences. The region is home to two world heritage listed national parks; The Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef.

A great spot to be introduced to those two regions is in Cairns CBD. There guests can visit the new Cairns Aquarium which is the only one in the world to exclusively showcase the aquatic wildlife of the reef and the Daintree.

The aquarium is home to around 15,000 animals and it also does great work to help the environment including growing coral, conserving wildlife and running a turtle rehabilitation centre.

A great place to base oneself in Cairns is at Waters Edge Apartments. It sits right on the esplanade and is blessed with incredible water views and boasts all the comforts of home.  And it’s just a short walk or drive to the marina where tourists can head to the Great Barrier Reef.

A great way to visit the reef is with Passions of Paradise. They run tours to the reef on board their 30metre sailing catamaran. It’s one of the fastest and largest sailing cats in Australia. Once at the reef, guests can enjoy scuba diving and snorkelling.

Passions of Paradise is an industry leader in eco-tourism. For example, they donate a portion of every dive certification to marine conservation and they offset their carbon emissions by planting trees in the Daintree…

Just south of Port Douglas is Thala Beach Nature Reserve. It’s an eco-lux resort that has been awarded the highest level of eco accreditation. Recently it was accepted into the Nat Geo unique lodges program. There are only five in Australia and fifty-seven worldwide.

Guests stay in boutique timber bungalows with amazing views and they can keep busy with a range of activities including nature walks. The tour of the coconut plantation is another popular option.

Guests can enjoy delicious food in the resort’s Osprey Restaurant which has incredible views of the water.

The Daintree rainforest is 100 million years old and a jewel in Queensland’s crown. And a great place for holiday makers to base themselves is the Daintree Eco Lodge. It offers fifteen lovey bayans perched in the rainforest.

The lodge is dedicated to protecting the environment and is a carbon neutral property that’s almost entirely solar powered and chemical free. It also donates fifty dollars for every guest to projects that protect the reef and rainforest.

The rainforest’s number one tourist attraction is the Daintree Discovery Centre. Here visitors can get an incredible perspective of the rainforest, from the forest floor to high in the canopy thanks to the 11 metre high canopy walkway.
