Row, Row, Row Your Boat… to Heart Health

At first light, Brisbane River is the picture of peace and beauty… and it’s the perfect time of the day to be out on the water.

The men of the Vikings Rowing Club, based in Brisbane’s West End, can certainly verify that the pre-dawn starts – 3 times a week – are well worth it.

Over the years, the masters club has evolved into a group of men from all backgrounds, enjoying the benefits of fitness and regular competition through rowing.

Physical exercise, camaraderie and social connection are the pillars of the club – which is home to a group of members who could well be Brisbane’s answer to the Oarsome Foursome.

No, they don’t have a gold medal or world record between them. But Michael, Ross, Bill and Ian have all beaten the odds – surviving heart health incidents that required treatment or surgery, along with lifestyle changes.

Evidence shows that being part of a community is good for your heart – along with regular physical activity. After each training session, the Vikings gather for breakfast and great coffee at The Coffee Roaster in Brisbane’s West End – part of the socializing that brings health benefits and a sense of community.
